Installation? What installation? SRN is completely portable. It can be run from any folder on a workstation or from a fileserver. Even from a USB stick.
When you download the Trial version of Student Response Network, you get a ZIP file. Save it to your Desktop or wherever you like. Open it and you’ll see a two folders – SRNserver and SRNclient and a Readme file. Make a folder called SRN somewhere like on your Desktop, and select all from the ZIP file and drag them into your SRN folder. Now you’ll have the files in an unzipped form, ready to use:
The Readme file is useful if you have no access to this website as it contains basic instructions for getting started.
OK, now the two folders SRNclient and SRNserver contain all the bits that you need to make the Student Response Network run. You need to place the SRNserver folder onto the teacher’s/presenter’s PC (it doesn’t matter where), and you need to place the SRNclient folder onto each workstation/laptop connected to the network. Alternatively, if you have a fileserver accessible to all workstations, it’s a great idea to put these two folders on there, but it’s recommended that the general users only get access to the SRNclient folder and that staff members get access to the SRNserver folder. This can be done best by placing the SRNserver folder into your Staff Shared folder and the SRNclient folder into the Student Shared folderon your fileserver. Once you’ve done that, it’s “installed“!
Starting the SRN Server:
On the teacher’s/presenter’s PC, open the SRNserver folder and double-click SRNserver program in there. If you are asked to “Keep Blocking” or “Unblock” by the Windows Firewall, click Unblock. For other firewalls that may be installed on the PC, you will need to ALLOW the SRNserver program to operate as a server. If you have problems with the Firewall, please read the FAQ page for more instructions.
You’ll then see a screen similar to the one below:
At the bottom-right, you’ll see the server’s IP address. This is important, because the clients will need to know what it is. Below that is the Server Port. The default setting is 3128 and that should be fine for just about any network. It is best to leave that setting and only change it if you are having problems connecting clients.
It is important that the SRN Server is Started before clients attempt to connect. Starting the server is as simple as clicking the big green Start button. The green Start button will change to a red Stop button. The SRN Server window will then “shrink” to hide the connection details, leaving a small, neat interface for the presenter/teacher to use. To “unhide” the Connection details and/or Stop the SRN Server, click the little right-arrow button at the top right. Clicking the Stop button will close down the server completely, as well as shutting down any connected clients automatically.
The SRN Server screen usually appears toward the top of the screen and can be moved around/minimized as desired. But it must remain Started and running to allow clients to connect and respond. Once started, the Client List window will appear at the top-right of the screen. To begin with, it is empty and very small. As clients connect, it will grow, containing the names of the connected clients. All the images below will relate to just one client connecting. In the free TRIAL version of SRN, a maximum of five (5) clients can connect. In the registered FULL version, a maximum of fifty(50) clients can connect simultaneously. More than enough for most classroom computer labs.
Starting the SRN Client:
On one of the user workstations, open the SRNclient folder and double-click the SRNclient icon. You’ll see a screen similar to the one below appear at the top of your screen:
Take note that this window will ALWAYS appear on top of other windows, making it easily accessible, regardless of what other applications are running on the workstation. The window can be minimized as desired.
If the Server IP is not already entered into the window, it will need to be manually typed in. The first part of your IP range will automatically be displayed meaning you just need to add the final digits for the server’s address. The teacher/presenter should notify all users of the correct Server IP address as visible on the SRN Server screen. Users should type in that address exactly, with NO SPACES. The port number should already be entered as 3128. Leave that setting as is. You should see on the server screen a window similar to the following. Just close it once all clients have connected.
Finally, in the name box on the SRN Client, each user should type in their name. The username used to logon to Windows will automatically be displayed, but can be changed. There is a maximum of 30 characters for the name field. When ready, click the green Connect button. Providing the IP Address and the Port number are correct and the SRN Server is running, the client should connect almost immediately and the green Connect button will change to a red Disconnect button and the client window will shrink back, hiding the connection information on the right, leaving a neat interface for the student to use, uncluttered by unnecessary options. Also, on the teacher’s/presenter’s PC, the Active Clients List should display the connected client’s name. The list grows as new clients connect and always appears in alphabetical order.
Note: It is very important that each client/student enters a unique name. If there are two students called Tracey, get one to add their Surname initial to make them unique. If two names are connected identically, only one named connection will appear in the list, but both clients will share that connection – not a good idea.
The “Raise Hand” Function:
The first student response option in SRN Client is “Raise Hand“. This is useful when:
- a student wishes to interrupt the teacher/presenter to ask a question or get clarification
- a “Beat the Buzzer” activity is being played, where first in gets to respond.
Clicking the purple “Raise Hand” button will play a gentle sound on the SRN Server PC and display a purple hand icon beside the requesting client’s name in the Active Clients List. While ever there is a purple hand icon visible beside a client’s name, no other client can raise their hand as they are automatically locked out. The teacher/presenter acknowledges the raised hand when ready by clicking on it in the Active Clients List. This will clear the hand icon and allow another client to raise their hand with a subsequent click of their purple button.
The Question-Response Options:
Aside from the “Raise hand” or “Beat the Buzzer” function, SRN Server offers two other Question-Response options:
- Yes/No or True/False
- Multiple Choice (4-way A/B/C/D)
In addition to the Question-Response games, it is also possible to selectively view or hide the Active Clients List, and well as view or hide the actual responses from each participant (client). For example, if you Enable Multiple Choice, then each client can click a multiple choice response (A/B/C/D) and their response will be acknowledged:
When Hide Responses is checked, as each client clicks an option as their response, a generic orange icon is shown beside their name (same icon for all clients).
When Hide Responses is unchecked, the ACTUAL button clicked by the client is displayed next to their name. It is usually best to leave these hidden while clients are still responding and only reveal them after all responses have been received. In some cases it is best to NOT reveal responses because sometimes this may highlight one or a small number of individuals who have clearly answered incorrectly.
Once all clients have responded, a Results button will appear which automatically tallies all results and displays a bar chart on the screen identifying the frequency of each response.
Nominating the Correct Answer and Displaying the Client Scoreboard:
When the bar chart is displayed on the screen, clicking on the letter of the correct answer will register that as the correct answer and Student Response Network can automatically keep a scoreboard for each client, allocating 1 point to each client that selected that answer. The scores for each client can then be displayed in the Active Clients List:
The Active Clients List will automatically be sorted from highest scorer to lowest. It is also possible to NOT keep the client scoreboard by removing the check from the Auto-Tally Scores checkbox BEFORE you start the SRN Server.
Continuing with the Next Question:
Once a question has been responded to and marked, you can carry on with subsequent questions during a server session. You can interchange between True/False/Yes/No and Multiple Choice as you like. Simply Enable the appropriate question type. If you are wanting two multiple choice questions in a row, after the first question is finished, remove the check from “Enable Multiple Choice” and then reinstate it. Questions will automatically increment, starting from Question 1.
Stopping the Server and Accessing the Question-Response Log File:
When you have completed a Question-Response session, simply click the red Stop button. You will be asked if you wish to save the log file. Click Yes, and providing you have MS Excel installed on the PC, the log file will be displayed. It identifies each question asked, and each response that each client provided in the order that they were received. The correct answer is also included in the log file for each question. The spreadsheet can be sorted by client if desired, saved, printed or emailed.
